PIA-T-87130 Kevlar Tape is a high-performance, flat-woven narrow fabric made from 100 % para-aramid (Kevlar®) fibers. Originally issued under MIL-T-87130 and now maintained by the Parachute Industry Association as PIA-T-87130, it is specified for life-critical applications where minimum weight, high tensile strength and excellent heat resistance are mandatory.
Tensile strength: 6,500 lbf (≈ 29 kN) for 1.75 in (45 mm) width – five times stronger than steel on an equal-weight basis.
Heat & flame: long-term 160 ℃, short-term 450 ℃; does not melt, drip or burn.
Low stretch: elongation at break < 3% – keeps canopy lines stable under shock loads.
Chemical: resists most acids, fuels and hydraulic fluids; not attacked by sea water.
Density: ~ 1.44 g/cm³ – floats on water, an advantage over steel-core solutions.
PIA-T-87130 is published in Types (width) and Classes (strength):
Type 1 / Class 2 – 13 mm / 500 lb (225 daN)
Type 6 / Class 2 – 25 mm / 525 lb (235 daN)
Type 9 / Class 5 – 45 mm / 3,000 lb (13.3 kN)
All types are plain-weave, shuttle-loom woven to give sealed, abrasion-resistant edges.
